What’s a blowout without a makeup touch-up? The two beauty treatments go together like flowers and chocolates, and the notion of pairing hair and beauty appointments led Blushington founder Stephi Maron to establish her makeup parlor in a space near Drybar at Sunset Plaza in Los Angeles to facilitate such arrangements. So as the love-struck prepare for dinner dates this Valentine’s Day, Blushington’s head makeup artist Jessica Scantlin shares her advice on lip tints as well as hairstyles that will complement everything from a bright red pout to a light pink smile. “Although I believe everyone should try out every red, there are some that look best with your skin tone,” she says. Scantlin recommends a coral hue such as Jouer’s Grace Hydrating Lipstick for fair complexions, “to help liven up skin without being too harsh.” She encourages those with medium tones go bold and try a true red lipstick, like Stila’s Color Balm Lipstick in Ruby or in Brigitte, a wine color. “Blue undertones look amazing with medium skin tones,” Scantlin says. “If you have a darker complexion, go with a deep burgundy,” she says. Kevin Aucoin’s Bloodroses Lipstick fits the bill for Valentine’s Day. “This shade compliments and creates a natural red,” she adds.

Blushington has menus with six makeup templates that bring to mind Drybar’s list of services (the beauty spots are not formally linked, but looks at both can be personalized). All three Blushington locations (West Hollywood, Newport Beach, and Dallas) are recognizable by their identical coral interiors and are stocked with understated lines such as Stila, Becca, Jouer, Kevyn Aucoin, and Julie Hewitt. And while Scantlin normally prefers a natural, fresh face, she encourages a vibrant look for Valentine’s Day. “When you want to go full glam with your red lips, go all out!” she says, noting that a smoky eye, or heavy winged liner and false lashes along with upswept hair will draw attention. “This will take your basic red lip up a notch.” For a more casual Valentine’s date, “just throw on some tinted moisturizer, illuminator, mascara, and always fill your brows,” Scantlin advises. For this effortless look, Scantlin suggests replacing a true red lipstick with sheer red gloss. Becca’s Ultimate Colour Gloss in Hotel California is a great option. “Try a pair of jeans, blouse, great heels, and keep your hair messy,” to complement the look.

Scantlin’s words to the wise as they prep for February 14: steer clear of garish colors. “Keep it classy and not clownish,” she advises.
